Happy National Pie Day
About National Pie Day — January 23
There’s something about pie that feels like home. Maybe it’s the smell in the kitchen, the laughter around the table, or the way one slice can bring back a thousand memories.
National Pie Day is celebrated each year on January 23, thanks to a man named Charlie Papazian, a teacher and engineer from Boulder, Colorado. In the mid-1970s, he declared his birthday “National Pie Day” simply because he loved pie. What began as a playful idea slowly spread, and in 1986, the American Pie Council officially adopted the day and began promoting it nationwide.
Pie itself has a long and delicious history. Early versions appeared in ancient Greece, then traveled through medieval England as savory and sweet “pyes,” before making their way to America. Over time, fruit pies like apple, cherry, and berry became symbols of family gatherings, holidays, and comfort. That’s why pie feels so personal to so many of us.
Today, National Pie Day is about more than dessert. It’s about sharing, slowing down, and savoring the people around us. Whether you bake from scratch, pick up a slice from your favorite bakery, or enjoy a memory of pies made long ago, this day invites us to celebrate the sweetness in everyday life.
A Senior Moment
Some of life’s sweetest moments are shared around the table. A slice of pie, a warm smile, and time with people who make us feel at home. Today, notice your Senior Moment — and if it feels right, pass it along to someone who could use a little extra warmth.
